Leadership Coaching
Michael Dell, founder of Dell Computers, employed six coaches at one time. Nearly every world class athlete has coaches to improve their performance. Among today’s Fortune 500 CEOs, it is estimated that more than seventy-five percent engage coaches.
Who should hire a Corner Man? New business leaders. Young CEO’s. Business leaders/executives lacking confidence in thier own leadership abilites. Fast-trackers. Leaders in transition or crisis.
Why hire “me” as your Corner Man? You should hire me because I have had great teachers, coaches and business leaders and learned from them all. I was born to teach but I am not an academic or theoretician…I have actually done it. I have been a champion athlete. I have coached, trained and developed world champion and world-class athletes and fighters…sometimes from the ground up! I have spent nearly fifteen years as an elite national senior level executive search consultant interviewing, knowing, learning from, consulting with, coaching and observing the most successful and talented executives anywhere in business today. I have been a top senior executive of one of the largest international retained executive search firms where I served as the senior in-house coach and trainer, managing director, practice president, member of the national dispute resolution committee and chair of the strategic reengineering project for one of the largest roll-ups in the history of Merrill Lynch. I have built a highly successful consulting practice and executive search firm of my own. I know about the psychology of success and the challenges, loneliness, responsibilities and rewards that come with leadership.
All of this has provided me insight into human character and capabilities few others can claim. Over the years I have developed a very definite set of ideas about leadership, how great leaders operate and how they succeed and how they fail.
Corner Man Coaching: Having a Corner Man is not about having someone sympathetic to talk to – that is counseling. It is also not about analyzing detailed business issues and strategies – that is business consulting. Having a Corner Man as your leadership coach is about helping you deepen your relationship to yourself, your colleagues and employees and to begin to develop better leadership skills and techniques that will make you a better leader for yourself and others.
Your Corner Man coaching program is part mentoring, part practical coaching and part experiential learning. Your Corner Man program combines the use of a number of the latest and more sophisticated analytical and diagnostic tools with helping you to be more introspective, observant and empathetic towards others. As your Corner Man I will help you deal with specific challenges you face and use these same challenges as opportunities to develop and forge your own leadership model that you will, hopefully, use long after our time together has ended.
As a result of our work together you will learn how to more effectively lead and influence the stakeholders (family, friends, colleagues and partners…all) that are part of your life’s journey.
One-on-One Leadership Coaching: This program is designed for individuals seeking to expand their leadership capabilities and effectiveness. Participants seek ways to better prepare, perform and meet new challenges ahead.

Program design:
- Stage 1: Discovery- In the initial phase of coaching, I will be gathering data on you and your leadership skills and challenges while gaining insight into your history to thoroughly assess your current situation. During this time I MAY use a number of tools to determine what leadership challenges you have and with whom.
- Stage 2: Planning – The second stage of the program will focus on setting specific goals and designing an action plan to support you in meeting your personal and professional objectives as a leader.
- Phase 3: Evolution – During the third stage, I will be using a variety of coaching tools and resources to implement our plan and see that your (our) goals are achieved. During the implementation phase, as your coach, I will be looking for blind spots, derailment factors, breakdown in communication, and multiple aspects of leadership development which can expedite or impede your progress. We will be focusing on the intangible assets of leadership, knowledge, talent, process, organization, decision making, execution, integrity and culture, AND character which are vital skills for leaders to hone in this new millennium.
- Phase 4: Evaluation - During phase four, together we will be assessing your progress and formulating a system for evaluating what is working/what is not so that your success is constant.
- Experiential Learning: As a participant in the program and as part of our experiential learning process you will be provided with a rare one-of-a-kind learning and life experience. At some point during our year together you will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with me as a real corner man in a real professional fight event. This is serious business and not to be taken lightly. To make sure it is official, I will secure your licenses (or temporary authority) for the various governing authorities. You will be required to be present the night before the fight and on the entire day of the event. If and when your schedule allows, you can also participate in the weeks prior to the fight as we prepare the fighter for his upcoming challenge. You will have full access to what it takes to prepare an athlete for a fight. You will attend weigh-ins and any press conferences that may be associated with this particular event. You will be tasked with specific duties and responsibilities before, during and after the fight… and you will carry them out as instructed. On fight night you will go back stage for the event and watch the process, meet the other coaches and fighters and be part of that process. During this time you will be in-service to your fighter and his coaches. Your only purpose is to be on a team and do all you can to see that your fighter wins. It will be hectic, intimidating, very powerful, enlightening and motivational. We will be sure to take pictures so you can hang them on your office wall.
- Learning transference: After the event we will debrief and go over what you saw, experienced and learned. We will make sure to transfer the lessons you learned into your life and business.
How it works: Leadership coaching is offered in person when possible, by telephone and/or electronic video for national and international clients. Coaching calls are typically held one to two times per month, usually over a period of six-twelve months and are combined with customized-to-fit individual needs and expectations. I am always accessible between sessions. All coaching conversations are kept strictly confidential. I consider my clients my partners and my sole interest is your success.
If you need a Corner Man and feel I would be a good fit for you or your organization, please contact me today at (240) 235-6624 for more info.
One-time intervention: If you are unsure about me, about coaching or question if this program is worth your investment, I suggest you try me out one time beforehand. The next time you have a challenge you would like to address I will come meet with you for a 2-hour(s) session and help you work on a current leadership challenge and also provide you with a few additional resources you can use in the future. These two hours will be extremely valuable and I can meet with you individually or with your team.
Cost $1,000.00 per session…one time only.
Leadership (in this context) is the ability to influence, maximize, focus and inspire yourself and others in the quest of a specific goal. Leadership is the essential element required for personal and organizational success. Leadership is hard work and each of us possesses various levels of natural leadership ability. Some are born with more ability in this area than others, however, most leaders are built over time and through direct exposure to, observation of, and mentorship by, other great leaders. In fact, most of the truly great “leaders” come from a coaching and/or leadership family tree of other great coaches/leaders. Many people have great business ideas, talented teams, technical skills and good strategies but it is the level of their leadership capabilities that will determine how close they come to realizing the potential of all these things.
My acknowledgement: What success I have achieved in life is due, in large part, to the great mentors, leaders, parents, teachers and coaches I had the good fortune to know. I continue to learn and submit myself to the leadership of others every day. For them I am eternally grateful and without them I am not sure where I would be today.
My coaching philosophy: You must submit to the leadership of another to fully understand and appreciate the power leadership represents. The person you are cannot ever be divorced from the type of leader you will be. Effective leadership results when effective techniques and strategies are combined with a series of consistent behaviors that, in themselves, influence and inspire the actions of others. You cannot “manipulate” your way into being a great leader. You must “be” the type leader you would wish to follow before you can become the leader you wish to be. Leadership is both an endeavor of the head and the heart.
Whatever you accomplish it will be with the help of others. How much you accomplish will be directly proportional to your ability as a leader.
